IP telephony & Voice over IP

IP telephony and Voice-over-IP telephony are becoming more and more widespread. Their advantages include the ability to use networks to carry more telephone connections than traditional circuit-switching networks.

IP telephony uses a dedicated voice network to transmit telephone conversations digitally. Voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephony uses an existing data network to carry the voice traffic by taking advantage of the spare capacity within the network.

Obviously, a dedicated IP telephony network will give a better quality of service than a VoIP telephony network. This quality must be weighed against the extra cost of installing a dedicated IP telephony network.
